OUR STORY

In 1864, about one year after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, a small band of former slaves armed with their freedom and their faith met for prayer.  Seeing spiritual renewal and hope, they moved from place to place worshiping in small dwellings and eventually built a wood framed church in the 400 block of 28th Street, beneath what is now knows as the 28th Street Bridge.  The church was named First Baptist Church and became the first form of organized religion located within the original city limits of Newport News.

Our Beliefs

First Church of Newport News (Baptist) has served as a beacon of light in our community since 1864 as the first form of organized religion within the original boundaries of the City of Newport News, Virginia.

Everyone is welcome to join us at this historical branch of Zion where the move of God is taking place through the preaching, teaching and serving, all done to the glory of God.  We believe God's Word; we trust His promises; and we share good news through our weekly study services, ministries and community outreach.

Our Core Values

Our congregation shares key truths that bind us together.  These are nonnegotiable truths that we have covenanted together to uphold.  We value core areas in the life of our church.  Together, these shared values identify who we are, rally toward all that we desire to accomplish, and unite us in fellowship.
